‘The Sprit Level’ at Gladstone Features Sam Gilliam’s Colorful, Cascading Canvases

NEW YORK—Gladstone Gallery is presenting an expansive show featuring 19 artists in both of its Chelsea locations. “The Spirit Level” includes work in a range of mediums, some of which is may be to out there to appeal to many viewers. The exhibit at the 21st street gallery was particularly compelling because displayed together the mix of work shown was very interesting visually and conceptually.

Sam Gilliam’s colorful canvases are a bright spot in the exhibit. Freed from their stretchers and manipulated while wet to achieve their muted affect, the works cascade from the gallery ceiling. One year ago today, a solo show of Gilliam’s canvases were the subject of the debut feature on Arts Observer.

“The Spirit Level” is on view from March 24 to April 21, 2012.
