A Towering Staircase Amid Skycrapers and Trees

NEW YORK—There is a 40-foot tall “Fir Tree” at the southeast entrance to Central Park. The latest public art installation at the site is a sort of melted spiral staircase. With pulleys and cranes, Polish artist Monika Sosnowska manipulated an actual steel staircase into the sculpture which is meant to resemble an evergreen tree.

“Fir Tree,” a Public Art Fund exhibit, is on view at Doris C. Freedman Plaza from Oct 24, 2012 to Feb. 17, 2013.
