Cedric Smith’s Mixed-Media Advertising Casts African Americans as Pitch People

NEW YORK—Growing up, Cedric Smith noticed that advertisements and product labels never featured anyone who looked like him. Inspired by his keen observation and an extensive vintage photography collection, his mixed-media works insert African Americans into period ads. The old-school images look like they are from a soda shop or general store.

A self-taught painter and photographer based in Atlanta, Smith’s work is a part of the Winter Group Show 2012 at Dillon Gallery, on view from Feb. 2 to March 6, 2012.
