NEW YORK—Back in the city, visited a few Chelsea galleries yesterday and caught this show of striking portraits by British artist Chantal Joffe at Cheim & Read just before it closed.
The series of new works captures women on larger-than-life canvases looking vulnerable, unique and attractive, at the same time slightly distorted. As the gallery notes, “Tension oscillates between the paintings’ ambitious scale and the intimacy implied in the posture and gaze of the women represented.” Joffe created the paintings working from photographs and fashion magazine images and also included self portraits in the exhibit.
The Chantal Joffe exhibit was on view through this weekend, from May 4 to June 23, 2012.
