Lady Aiko Puts Her Mark on the Bowery Mural Wall

NEW YORK—The latest mural at the intersection of Houston and Bowery streets is decidedly feminine. A collage of tattoo-like motifs, the work by Tokyo-born Lady Aiko is mostly black and white with moments of pink and lavender and the requisite shout out—in this case to Brooklyn, where the artist lives.

Apparently, Aiko is the first woman to create a mural for the prominent wall. A couple of alluring ladies bookend the work that was installed in early July. With references to an 888 phone number for “only you” and a banner announcing “There is Fun for Everyone,” visual and text elements celebrate the promise of romance and pleasure.
