NEW YORK—One of the things I love about New York is that there is literally art everywhere. I went to the post office at Grand Central Terminal and for the first time noticed an installation of wood and stone sculptures by Maria Cohen. I use the postal location regularly and this is the first time I recall noticing them. It appears the works have been on display for years with little attention to their upkeep—their condition is less than pristine.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Postal Service made a disappointing announcement yesterday. USPS is reducing services to address persistent and mounting budget shortfalls as mail volume continues to decline. First class mail was reduced by 36 percent over the past five years and by 50 percent in the past decade. Planned actions include elimination of overnight service, closing or consolidating 252 processing centers and more than 30,000 layoffs.
