Yayoi Kusama at Robert Miller: Gold Shoes, Louis Vuitton, the Tate and the Whitney

NEW YORK—Robert Miller Gallery has introduced a window shopping experience on West 26th Street. Dozens of gold shoes by Yayoi Kusama are on display in the gallery’s front window. Known for her bold infinity dots and phallic references (see gold shoes), Kusama’s work will straddle the art and retail worlds when her collaboration with Louis Vuitton launches in July.

A multidisciplinary, avant garde legend, the 82-year-old Japanese artist is in the midst of a series of high-profile projects. Louis Vuitton is supporting her Tate Modern exhibit (Feb. 9 to June 5, 2012) and will also underwrite the show when it travels to the Whitney Museum later this year (July 12 to Sept. 30, 2012). And she currently has a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in Saitama, Japan, and is featured in “Double Vision: Contemporary Art from Japan” at the State Museum of Modern Art in Moscow.

Kusama worked with Marc Jacobs on a full line of products for Louis Vuitton, including its signature leather goods, as well as ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories. The debut of the collaboration will feature an exhibit of new works of art by Kusama and special window installations at the luxury brand’s store on Bond Street in London.
